False Vacuum Witnesses
A queer activist, artistic, and research project including self-publishing and interventions. 2024–present.
False Vacuum Witnesses is a queer activist, artistic, and research movement that challenges not only hetero- and cisnormativity, but also the authoritarian regimes that oppress us. It emerged in an atmosphere of fear and violence, where rights are violated and self-expression is tightly controlled. We see ourselves as part of a global struggle against authoritarianism and militarism — including war and repression.
The name refers to the scientific idea of a “false vacuum”: a metastable state in quantum field theory. We use it to underline the instability of assumptions about gender and sexuality — and as a metaphor for a world that can be swept away at any moment by a wave of transformation. Living under constant threat, we still refuse to abandon queer joy. Our slogan — “Let’s live this moment in the agony of genuine queer joy!” — is a manifesto of resilience, not passivity.
We work in Russia and Central Asia, organizing in territorial cells (Samara, Siberia, Bishkek). Through samizdat newspapers and artistic actions we aim to provoke a rethinking of norms and to widen the boundaries of the acceptable — toward a society grounded in cosmic eros and queer radicalism.

The newspaper was distributed covertly — left in toilets of cultural institutions and circulated through bookcrossings.
